Audiobook Speed Calculator: Listening Time & Time Remaining

Calculate audiobook listening time at your chosen playback speed, including the remaining time after content you have already completed. You can also use this for podcasts, lectures and recorded courses.

1x is normal speed. A higher value shortens listening time; a lower value lengthens it.

Completed content means your position on the original recording timeline, not the time you have spent listening. Leave both fields at 0 for a new book.

How to calculate audiobook listening time

First convert the original recording duration to minutes: hours x 60 + minutes. Divide that duration by the playback speed. At 1.5x, a 10-hour audiobook takes 400 minutes, or 6 hours 40 minutes. At 2x it takes 5 hours. At 0.5x it takes 20 hours.

Calculate time remaining

Subtract completed content from the original duration before dividing by speed. For Original duration: hours 10, Original duration: minutes 0, Playback speed (x) 1.5, Completed content: hours 2 and Completed content: minutes 30, there are 7 hours 30 minutes of original content remaining. Listening to that remainder takes 5 hours.

Time saved or extra time

The time difference compares the full recording at 1x with the full recording at the selected speed. A 10-hour book at 1.5x saves 3 hours 20 minutes. Slower playback adds listening time. This comparison covers the full recording, not just its remainder.

Limits and rounding

Hours and minutes must be whole numbers, minutes from 0 to 59. Speeds from 0.25x to 4x and recordings up to 10000 hours 59 minutes are supported as software limits, not player compatibility guarantees. Results round to the nearest second; calculations retain unrounded values. No breaks, buffering, introductions skipped, silence removal or future speed changes are included. A recording already completed has zero remaining time.

Use your original timeline position

Two hours spent listening at 1.5x generally advances three hours of original content. Enter three hours as completed content in that example, assuming uninterrupted constant-speed playback. If your app already shows an adjusted countdown, do not divide that countdown again. Check which duration your player displays.
