Tile Calculator: Square Footage, Tiles & Boxes
Estimate how many rectangular tiles and boxes to buy from the area to cover, tile dimensions, and an allowance you choose. Use a rectangular area or enter a known total area.
Calculate tile area, quantity, and boxes
Use matching units and actual tile dimensions. This is an area-based purchasing estimate, not an exact layout or cutting plan. Check the manufacturer's stated coverage and your installer's recommendations before ordering.

Estimated tiles including your allowance
- Area to cover
- Whole-tile area estimate before allowance
- Your extra area allowance
- Nominal area of the estimated purchase
Boxes to buy
- Tiles in those boxes
- Tiles added by box rounding
Nominal purchased area is tile count x entered tile area, including full boxes where supplied. It is not guaranteed installed coverage. Quantities are rounded up; displayed areas use up to four decimal places. Pattern, cuts, reuse of offcuts, breakage, joints, and actual carton coverage can change the order needed.
Your entries are calculated in this browser. This tool does not save or send them. Google Blogger may separately provide its own platform services and cookies.

How to calculate square footage for tile
Area (square feet) = length (feet) x width (feet). For several sections, add their areas without double counting. You can enter that combined total using the known-area mode.
How many tiles do you need?
Tile area (square feet) = tile length (inches) x tile width (inches) / 144. Divide the surface area plus your chosen extra percentage by tile area, then round up to a whole tile. The allowance is applied to the area before quantity rounding.
Example assumptions: 10 ft x 10 ft = 100 square feet. A 12 in x 12 in tile has 1 square foot of area. With a chosen 10% allowance, the estimate is 110 tiles. If there are 12 tiles per box, round 110 / 12 up to 10 boxes, containing 120 tiles. The 10% is an example, not a recommendation for every installation.
Metric tile calculation
Tile area (square meters) = tile length (cm) x tile width (cm) / 10,000. Divide your square-meter area including allowance by this tile area and round up. Boxes are rounded up again from the tile count.
Frequently asked questions
Does this include grout joints?
No. The tool does not subtract grout area or estimate grout quantity. It uses rectangular tile dimensions only, without producing a layout. Grout spacing can affect installed coverage and cuts.
Can I use nominal sizes or mosaic sheets?
Use actual dimensions appropriate to what you are counting. For mosaics sold by sheet, manufacturer sheet coverage is often more appropriate than treating individual tesserae as ordinary tiles. This tool does not model mesh gaps, interlocking edges, or irregular shapes.
What if the box states area coverage instead of tile count?
Do not enter area coverage as tiles per box. Use the manufacturer coverage to check your purchasing quantity separately; stated carton coverage can differ from the area implied by individual tile dimensions.
What reserve should I choose?
Ask your installer or supplier based on layout, cuts, breakage, and future matching repairs. A single percentage does not determine an exact cutting plan. Zero adds no extra area, but tile and box rounding still occur.
What input limits apply?
Dimensions and known area accept four decimal places. Dimensions must be positive and no more than 100,000 in the displayed units. Area is limited to one billion square feet or square meters. Allowance is 0% to 100%, with two decimal places. Optional tiles per box is a whole number from 1 to 100,000. Tile estimates above one billion are rejected. These are calculation limits, not installation recommendations.
