Desk Height Calculator: Seated & Standing Setup
Estimate desktop height from your measured elbow level and the height of your keyboard above the desktop. Choose seated or standing measurements. This is an alignment starting point, not a universal ideal desk height or a medical assessment.
How this desk height calculator works
For seated use, elbow level above floor = seat height above floor + elbow height above seat. Desktop height = elbow level above floor - keyboard height above desktop. For standing use, enter elbow height above the floor directly and subtract keyboard height.
The calculation places the entered working key surface at the entered elbow level. It does not infer body dimensions from stature, change chair height automatically or calculate a single correct height for everyone.
Worked seated example
Choose Setup Seated desk and Measurement unit Inches (in). Enter Seat height above floor 18, Elbow height above seat 10 and Keyboard height above desktop 1. Select Calculate desk height.
Elbow level is 18 + 10 = 28 in. Subtracting the keyboard height gives a desktop height of 27 in. If Current desk height (optional) is 29, the change is -2 in, meaning the calculated desktop level is two inches lower than the entered desk. These example measurements are not recommended dimensions for every person.
Measure the seated position
Settle into the chair and posture you intend to use. Measure seat height while seated, since a cushion may compress. Measure the vertical distance from that same seat reference to the elbow with shoulders relaxed and forearms positioned for typing.
The seat reference must match between the two measurements. Adding a floor-to-seat distance to an elbow measurement taken from another reference creates an error. Consider foot support, chair support and available leg space rather than changing seat height solely to fit a fixed desk.
Standing desk measurements
Choose Standing desk and enter Standing elbow height above floor in the intended working posture, with the footwear you normally use. For example, an elbow height of 44 in and keyboard height of 1 in give a desktop level of 43 in under this alignment model.
Only the selected setup's body measurements are used. Standing measurements do not establish how long to stand or a sit-stand schedule. Varying posture and choosing a comfortable arrangement require more than one height calculation.
Account for the equipment
Measure the height from desktop to the working key surface, not just the keyboard case's tallest edge. A thick keyboard, stand or riser changes the desktop level needed for the same key height. Tilt and wrist posture also matter, but are not modeled here.
This tool assumes the keyboard is on or above the desktop. A below-desk tray, sloping work surface or task other than typing needs a different measurement model. Monitor position, reach distance and mouse placement are not calculated.
Use the result as a starting point
An elbow-level calculation cannot guarantee comfort or prevent injury. Actual needs vary with posture, task, equipment and individual circumstances. Try adjustments gradually and assess the entire workstation. Seek appropriate ergonomic or clinical guidance if you have persistent symptoms or specific needs.
For screen-center geometry based on eye level and viewing distance, the TV Mount Height Calculator explains that separate calculation; it is not a desk-monitor placement prescription.

Limits and privacy
All measurements must be finite and no greater than 1000 in the selected unit. Body measurements and current desk height must be positive; keyboard height may be zero. The calculated desktop level must remain positive. Results round to two decimal places and do not imply measurement accuracy.
Calculations run locally in your browser. The calculator does not save or send your measurements. The hosting website may use separate analytics or advertising services.
