Vinyl Plank Flooring Calculator: Multiple Rooms, Boxes & Cost
Estimate vinyl plank flooring boxes for up to five rectangular rooms or zones using the same product. Combine their areas before rounding to full boxes, then optionally calculate materials and entered installation costs.
Rooms, boxes, and cost
How many boxes of vinyl plank flooring do I need?
Add the areas of all included rectangles. Apply your chosen waste allowance to that combined area, divide by the manufacturer's coverage per box, and round up to whole boxes. Do separate calculations for different products or coverage values.
Example with two rooms
A 12 x 10 ft room and a 10 x 8 ft room total 200 sq ft. At an illustrative 10% waste allowance, the adjusted area is 220 sq ft. If one box covers 24 sq ft, you need 10 boxes, providing 240 sq ft. At $60 per box, material cost is $600. Add a $400 installation quote and $50 of other costs for an entered budget of $1,050. These prices are examples, not market rates.
Why combine rooms before rounding?
For areas of 30 and 10 sq ft with no waste and 20 sq ft per box, the combined estimate is 2 boxes. Rounding each room independently would give 2 + 1 = 3 boxes. Sharing material is only appropriate for the same product and a workable installation plan.
What if I do not know the price?
Leave price per box blank to calculate quantities only. No full project cost will be shown until you enter a box price. A price of zero is accepted only as an explicit input, not an assumed free product.
What is excluded?
This is not a row-by-row plank layout, moisture assessment, subfloor evaluation, or installation specification. Product suitability, waterproofing claims, underlayment, expansion gaps, stairs, and trim quantities need separate checks. Sales tax is not calculated automatically; enter any missing tax amount under Other costs.
