How to convert hours and minutes to decimal hours
Decimal hours = hours + minutes / 60.
For 7 hours and 30 minutes: 7 + 30 / 60 = 7.50 hours. For 8 hours and 15 minutes: 8 + 15 / 60 = 8.25 hours.
To convert minutes only, leave the hours field empty. For example, 90 / 60 = 1.50 hours.

Frequently asked questions
Is 7.30 hours the same as 7 hours 30 minutes?
No. The decimal fraction is a portion of an hour: 0.30 x 60 = 18 minutes. So 7.30 decimal hours means 7 hours 18 minutes. Seven hours 30 minutes is 7.50 hours.
Can I enter more than 59 minutes?
Yes. This tool converts durations, so 1 hour plus 90 minutes becomes 2 hours 30 minutes, or 2.50 hours. Hours must be between 0 and 9,999; minutes must be between 0 and 599,999.
How many decimal places should I use?
Two decimal places are convenient for reading a total. Use three or four for a more precise display, but retain the original minutes when adding durations. For example, three 20-minute periods total 1.00 hour, even though 0.33 + 0.33 + 0.33 is 0.99.
Can I use this for clock times or payroll?
Enter a duration, not a time of day. To calculate the time between a start and end time and subtract unpaid breaks, use our Time Card Calculator. This converter does not apply pay rates or payroll rounding policies.
