Grout Calculator: Tile Coverage, Packs & Cost

Estimate grout bags or tubs using the manufacturer's coverage for your exact product, package size, tile dimensions, joint width, and joint depth. Compare a coverage range when your product guidance provides one.

Grout coverage, packs, and cost

A pack means one purchased bag or tub. Match its price to its full package coverage. Enter tiled installation area, not the area of the joints alone or the coverage of extra tile boxes. Subtract untiled openings before entering the area. Blank surface fields count as zero.

Select coverage from the product's chart for your tile length and width, joint width, joint fill depth, and package size. Combine surfaces only when the product and applicable coverage match. For different tile sizes or joints, run separate calculations.

Allowance starts at 0% and supports 0-50%; choose it for your project. Changing units clears areas and coverage rather than converting them. Prices remain US dollars.

Enable JavaScript to calculate. Manually add net tiled installation areas, multiply by 1 + allowance / 100, divide by package coverage, and round up. Lower coverage per pack means more packs.

How much tile grout do I need?

Estimated packs = round up [net tiled area x (1 + allowance / 100) / manufacturer coverage per purchased pack]. Use the coverage corresponding to the actual product and tile-and-joint configuration. The weight of a bag alone does not determine its coverage.

Worked example

A 100 sq ft floor plus 50 sq ft of matching wall tile totals 150 sq ft. With an illustrative 10% allowance, the adjusted area is 165 sq ft. If your applicable package coverage is 40-50 sq ft, the estimate is 4 packs at 50 sq ft per pack, or 5 packs at 40 sq ft per pack. At an illustrative $20 per pack, the material estimate is $80-$100. These numbers illustrate the calculation; they are not coverage or price recommendations.

Why not use a default density?

Different grouts and packaging have different yields. Powder bulk density, mixed-product density, and powder required to fill a joint are not interchangeable. This calculator uses product coverage rather than assuming a universal density or turning tile thickness directly into grout weight.

What if there is no matching coverage chart?

Ask the manufacturer or supplier for guidance for your tile dimensions and joint configuration. Do not guess a coverage value from a different product or package. This calculator does not prescribe joint width, installation depth, mixing water, or product suitability.

What does the cost include?

Only whole purchased packs multiplied by your entered price. Tax, delivery, labor, tile, thinset, sealant, tools, and other supplies are excluded unless included in that pack price. Leave price blank for quantities only.

Does grout make a shower waterproof?

This quantity estimate does not design or validate a waterproofing system. Follow product and assembly requirements separately. It is not a calculator for filling concrete block cores, structural grout, or other non-tile applications.
