Wall Insulation Calculator: Area, Packs & Cost
Estimate whole packs or rolls of wall insulation for up to five rectangular walls. Subtract doors and windows, choose a material allowance, and use the coverage on your exact product label.
Wall area and insulation packs
How to calculate wall insulation
For each rectangular wall: net area = length x height - door and window opening area. Add net areas, multiply by (1 + allowance / 100), divide by stated coverage per purchased pack, and round up to whole packs. Calculate different products or layers separately.
Worked example
A 12 x 8 ft wall with 16 sq ft of openings and a 10 x 8 ft wall with 10 sq ft of openings have a combined net area of 150 sq ft. A 10% allowance makes that 165 sq ft. At 40 sq ft per pack, the estimate is 5 packs, covering 200 sq ft. At an illustrative $30 per pack, material cost is $150. This price and allowance are examples, not market rates or a universal recommendation.
Does this choose an R-value?
No. Required thermal performance depends on the assembly, location, applicable requirements, and product installation. This tool does not select R-value, determine code compliance, estimate energy savings, or convert thickness into guaranteed thermal performance.
Can I use it for blown-in or spray foam insulation?
Not as a generic yield estimate. Those products require product-specific depth, density, and installed-performance information. This tool is intended for area-labelled packs of batts, rolls, or boards whose coverage matches the chosen application.
What does the cost include?
Only estimated whole packs multiplied by your price per pack. Labor, delivery, taxes, membranes, fixings, and accessories are excluded unless already included in that price. Leave the price blank for quantities only.
