Concrete Block Fill Calculator: Volume, Bags & Cost
Estimate fill volume from the number of installed blocks being filled and the manufacturer's fill volume per block for your exact configuration. Add optional bag yield and price to estimate whole bags and material cost.
Block fill volume and bags
How much fill do concrete blocks need?
Adjusted fill volume = installed blocks being filled x manufacturer fill volume per block x (1 + allowance / 100). Whole bags = round up [adjusted fill volume / manufacturer mixed yield per bag]. Bag-only cost = whole bags x entered price per bag.
Worked example
For an illustrative 100 blocks with 0.12 cu ft of fill per block, net volume is 12 cu ft. A chosen 10% allowance gives 13.2 cu ft, approximately 0.4889 cu yd. If the specified product yields 0.6 cu ft per bag, the estimate is 22 bags. At an illustrative $8 per bag, material cost is $176. These inputs are arithmetic examples, not standard block capacities, recommended allowances, product yields, or market prices.
Can I enter an 8 x 8 x 16 block size?
Nominal outside dimensions include the block's solid material and do not reveal the void volume. Obtain a fill-volume table for the actual block and configuration. If the supplier gives volume for a batch of identical blocks, convert it to a per-block value in the chosen units before entry. Use sufficient input precision and verify large orders with the supplier.
Does this choose concrete, grout, or mortar?
No. Concrete fill, masonry grout, and joint mortar are not interchangeable. Follow the block manufacturer's instructions and project specifications for suitable material, required cells, reinforcement, placement, and strength. This calculator does not decide which cells must be filled or design a load-bearing or retaining wall.
What is included in the cost?
Only whole bags at your entered price. Blocks, joint mortar, reinforcement, labor, pumps, delivery, and taxes are separate unless included in that bag price. For ready-mix or other bulk supply, use the volume result to request a supplier quote; minimum orders and delivery charges are not estimated here.
