GPA Calculator: Semester, Credits & Cumulative GPA

Calculate a semester GPA from course credits and numeric grade points. Optionally combine it with your previous GPA and GPA credits to estimate a cumulative GPA. Use your institution's grade-point mapping and include only credits that count toward its GPA.

The default is a 4-point scale. This is an input ceiling, not an automatic conversion or an honors/AP bonus. Check your institution's official grading rules.

Previous credits must be GPA-bearing credits, on the same grade-point scale. A rounded previous GPA makes the combined result approximate.

JavaScript is required for the calculator. The formulas and examples below remain available.

How to calculate semester GPA with credits

For each course, multiply credits by grade points to get quality points. Add those quality points and divide by total GPA credits. GPA = sum(credits x grade points) / sum(credits). Do not average course grade points without weighting unless every course has equal credits.

For Course 1, enter Credits 3 and Grade points 4. For Course 2, enter Credits 4 and Grade points 3. For Course 3, enter Credits 2 and Grade points 2. The total is 28 quality points across 9 credits, giving 3.1111 GPA, rounded.

How to calculate cumulative GPA

Estimated cumulative GPA = (previous GPA x previous GPA credits + new semester quality points) / (previous GPA credits + new semester credits). For Previous GPA credits 30 and Previous cumulative GPA 3.2, combined with the example semester, the result is 124 / 39 = 3.1795, rounded.

Do not take a simple average of previous and semester GPA when their credit totals differ. If your transcript shows exact previous quality points, using a rounded prior GPA here may not reproduce the official result.

Letter grades, failures and excluded courses

Convert letter grades to numeric points using your institution's published table. This tool does not assume that every A-, B+ or honors course has a universal point value. A zero grade-point value is valid for a GPA-bearing failed course; keep its counted credits. Exclude courses that your institution excludes from GPA rather than assigning them an invented grade.

Pass/fail, withdrawals, audits, transfer credits and repeated courses follow institution-specific rules. This tool does not automatically apply grade replacement, credit forgiveness or admission-specific calculations. Combine only comparable scales; changing the scale maximum does not convert entered points.

Limits and related tools

Enter 1 to 30 courses. Each course accepts credits greater than zero up to 100; numeric grade points must be between zero and the chosen maximum. The scale maximum must be greater than zero up to 10. Prior GPA credits may be greater than zero up to 10000. These are software limits, not universal academic rules. Decimal inputs support up to four places.

For assignment percentages and points earned within a class, use the Grade Calculator. GPA weights course grade points by credits; it is not the same as averaging assignment scores or predicting scholarship eligibility.
