TV Mount Height Calculator: Screen Center & Viewing Angle
Estimate the center, top and bottom of a 16:9 TV screen from seated eye height, horizontal viewing distance and a chosen viewing angle. This is a geometry planner; try the position with a paper template before drilling.
How to calculate TV mounting height
Screen center height = seated eye height + horizontal distance x tan(viewing angle). Use the same length unit for height and distance. An angle of zero gives a center at seated eye height. The angle is the line of sight toward the screen center, not the tilt setting of the bracket.
For a 16:9 screen, visible height = diagonal x 9 / sqrt(16 squared + 9 squared). Screen bottom = center - half the visible height; screen top = center + half the visible height. Use actual manufacturer dimensions for other aspect ratios or when planning cabinet clearance.
Worked example: a 55-inch TV
Choose Inches. Enter Seated eye height 42, Horizontal viewing distance 96, TV diagonal (inches) 55 and Viewing angle (degrees) 0. Select Calculate TV height. The center is 42 in, visible height 26.96 in, bottom 28.52 in and top 55.48 in, rounded.
Keeping those inputs but choosing 5 degrees raises the center by 8.40 in to 50.40 in. This illustrates geometry, not a recommendation to use a five-degree angle. Comfort depends on seating posture, viewing duration and the viewer.
Measure from your actual seat
Sit as you normally watch TV, including your usual cushions or reclined position, and have someone measure your eye height. Horizontal distance differs from the sloping eye-to-screen distance. Check a template from every regularly used seat. A larger diagonal changes screen edges, but does not change the center for a fixed eye height, distance and angle.
Screen height is not bracket height
The VESA holes may not be centered on the screen. Rail position, wall plate geometry and bracket adjustment determine the drilling height. Follow the TV and mount instructions, verify wall structure and fixings, and check the rated load. This tool does not assess structural safety, electrical routing or fireplace heat clearances.
Ranges and limitations
Eye height must be greater than zero up to 300 in the selected unit; horizontal distance greater than zero up to 2000; diagonal greater than zero up to 300 inches; angle between -30 and 30 degrees. These are software limits, not ergonomic standards. Inputs describe one viewing position and a flat 16:9 visible screen. Results round to two decimals, so retain manufacturer tolerances and clearance when planning.
