Thinset Calculator: Coverage, Bags & Cost
Estimate whole bags of thinset mortar using your tile installation area and the coverage stated for your exact product and application. Enter one coverage value or a manufacturer coverage range.
Area, bag coverage, and cost
How much thinset do I need?
Estimated bags = round up [net installation area x (1 + allowance / 100) / coverage per bag]. Coverage is product-specific. A bag's weight alone does not determine its installed coverage.
Example using a coverage range
A 120 sq ft floor plus 80 sq ft of wall area totals 200 sq ft. With an illustrative 10% allowance, the adjusted area is 220 sq ft. If your product's applicable coverage is 40-50 sq ft per bag, the estimate is 5 bags at 50 sq ft per bag, or 6 bags at 40 sq ft per bag. At an illustrative $25 per bag, material cost is $125-$150. These coverage and price figures are arithmetic examples, not a recommendation for a specific product.
What is included in the optional cost?
Only whole bags multiplied by your bag price. It excludes tax, delivery, labor, tile, grout, tools, and other materials unless already included in that bag price. Leave price blank for quantities only.
Does this choose a suitable mortar or installation method?
No. Follow the exact product instructions and applicable requirements for material compatibility, trowel selection, substrate preparation, coverage/contact, and installation. The calculator does not specify mixing water, bed thickness, bond strength, or waterproofing, and it is not a structural grout or concrete calculator.
