Roof Shingle Calculator: Squares & Bundles
Estimate field-shingle bundles from the actual sloped roof area and your product's installed coverage per bundle. See roofing squares before and after an optional project-specific allowance. One roofing square equals 100 square feet of roof surface.
Calculate roofing squares and bundles
Use actual roof-surface area from reliable project measurements or plans, not house floor area. Coverage must be the product's installed coverage per bundle. This tool does not measure a roof, apply a pitch factor, or tell you to climb onto it.

Estimated field-shingle bundles
- Actual roof area entered
- Roofing squares before allowance
- Coverage area with entered allowance
- Roofing squares with allowance
Bundle count rounds up from the unrounded requirement. Other displayed values use up to four decimals; positive values below 0.0001 are labeled accordingly. This estimates field shingles only, not a complete roof order. Confirm quantities, product coverage, and allowances with your supplier or roofer.

How to calculate roof shingles
Roofing squares = actual roof area in square feet / 100.
Bundle equivalents = actual area x (1 + allowance / 100) / installed coverage per bundle. Round up once to whole bundles.
A roof surface of 1,500 square feet is 15 roofing squares. If the chosen product states 32.8 square feet of installed coverage per bundle, 1,500 / 32.8 gives approximately 45.73 equivalents, so the estimate is 46 whole bundles without an extra allowance. The coverage is an example, not a universal rate.
For measurement guidance and worked examples, read our guide to calculating roof shingles, squares, and bundles.
Allowance example
If a project-specific 10% allowance is specified for the same area, coverage needed is 1,500 x 1.10 = 1,650 square feet. At 32.8 square feet per bundle, the result rounds up to 51 bundles. This illustrates the formula; it does not recommend 10% for every roof.
Roof area is different from house footprint
The surface on a pitched roof can exceed its horizontal projection. Overhangs and multiple roof planes also affect the area. Enter the actual sloped area once; this calculator does not automatically determine slope or add a pitch factor.
Use reliable plans or a professional measurement. Do not treat this tool as a reason to access an exposed roof. For known rectangular surface dimensions, our Square Footage Calculator can calculate area; it does not interpret roof geometry.
Frequently asked questions
How many bundles are in a roofing square?
It depends on the product. Divide 100 square feet by the installed coverage per bundle, or use the manufacturer's bundles-per-square specification. Do not assume a fixed count for all shingles.
What coverage should I enter?
Use the installed coverage of one bundle from the product label or technical guidance. Do not use the gross area of loose shingles laid flat, because installation includes overlap.
Does this include starter, hip, and ridge products?
No. Field shingles are only one part of the order. Starter strips, hip and ridge caps, underlayment, flashing, fasteners, and other specified components may require separate product-specific calculations.
Do I subtract roof openings?
Not automatically. Openings can create cuts and flashing requirements, so the whole opening area may not translate into fewer bundles. Ask the estimator or roofer how to treat them.
Can I use metric measurements?
Yes. Enter actual roof area and installed coverage per bundle in square meters. One roofing square equals 9.290304 square meters. The bundle calculation uses the matching input units directly.
What happens when I change units?
Area and product coverage clear to prevent mixing square feet and square meters. The optional percentage allowance remains unchanged. Re-enter both measurements in the selected units.
What inputs are supported?
Actual area greater than zero and no more than 1,000,000, coverage greater than zero and no more than 10,000 in displayed area units, and optional allowance from 0% to 100%. Up to four decimal places are accepted, using a decimal point or comma without thousands separators.
