Mulch Calculator: Cubic Yards & Bags
Estimate how much mulch you need for a rectangular garden bed. Enter length, width, and planned depth to calculate volume, then use the volume printed on your bag to estimate how many whole bags to buy.
Calculate mulch volume and bags
Use a uniform depth appropriate for your project. Bag size is volume, not weight. Check the package label; not all bags contain the same amount.

Estimated bags to buy
- Volume in cubic yards
- Volume in cubic feet
- Volume in cubic meters
Geometric volume only. No extra allowance for settling, uneven ground, or handling losses. Volumes display up to four decimals; values below 0.0001 are labeled accordingly. Confirm your material and ordering quantity with the supplier.

How to calculate mulch needed
Cubic yards = length (feet) x width (feet) x depth (inches) / 324
For a rectangular bed 12 feet long and 9 feet wide at a depth of 3 inches: 12 x 9 x 3 / 324 = 1 cubic yard, or 27 cubic feet. This is an example depth, not a recommendation for every plant or material.
How many bags of mulch do I need?
Bag equivalents = required volume / volume per bag. Round up to a whole bag for purchasing.
For 27 cubic feet and bags labeled 2 cubic feet, 27 / 2 = 13.5 bag equivalents, so buy 14 whole bags before any additional project-specific allowance.
How many bags of mulch are in one cubic yard?
| Bag volume | Bag equivalents | Whole bags |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5 cubic feet | 18 | 18 |
| 2 cubic feet | 13.5 | 14 |
| 3 cubic feet | 9 | 9 |
Bag sizes above are examples. Always use the volume on the product label.
Metric mulch calculations
Cubic meters = length (m) x width (m) x depth (cm) / 100. One cubic meter equals 1,000 liters. For a 10 m by 2 m bed at 5 cm depth, the volume is 1 cubic meter. With 50-liter bags, that is 20 bags.
Bark mulch and other materials
The volume formula works for a uniform layer of bark mulch or other loose mulch sold by volume. It does not convert bag weight into volume, select a horticultural depth, or determine how much the material settles. Confirm suitability and installation requirements separately. It does not assess playground impact protection.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use bags measured in liters with US dimensions?
Yes. The dimension system and bag unit are independent. The calculator converts the volume before dividing by the labeled bag size.
Why do the dimensions clear when I switch units?
To avoid using a number entered in feet as meters. Enter the dimensions again in the newly selected units. The bag size keeps its own explicitly selected unit.
Does the result include extra mulch?
No extra percentage is added. Whole-bag rounding only covers the calculated geometric volume. Ask your supplier about settling, uneven beds, and any additional allowance.
What about irregular beds?
Divide the bed into non-overlapping rectangles and calculate each volume. If using the same bag size, add the volumes before rounding bags to avoid unnecessary extra bags from rounding each section separately.
What inputs are supported?
Use positive numbers with up to four decimal places, using a decimal point or comma, without thousands separators. Length and width can be up to 10,000 in the displayed units, depth up to 1,000, and bag size up to 10,000 in its selected unit.
Can I estimate gravel instead?
Use our Gravel Calculator for gravel volume and optional material cost.
