Protein Calculator: Daily Grams by Body Weight

Calculate daily protein grams from body weight using an adult reference, an exercising-adult range or your own factor. These figures are general estimates, not an individualized prescription or a weight-loss plan.

How to calculate protein by body weight

Daily protein in grams = body weight in kilograms x selected grams per kilogram per day. Pounds convert to kilograms using the exact conversion 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg. Changing the unit selector reinterprets your entry rather than converting the input field.

For 70 kg, the general adult reference gives 70 x 0.8 = 56 g/day. The exercising-adult range gives 70 x 1.4 to 70 x 2.0 = 98 to 140 g/day. These methods answer different questions; the larger range is not automatically better for everyone.

General adult reference

The US/Canadian Dietary Reference Intakes set an adult protein Recommended Dietary Allowance of 0.8 g/kg/day. An RDA is intended to cover the needs of nearly all healthy people in the relevant group. It is not a universal maximum intake or a precise measurement of one person's needs.

This simple weight-based implementation is for adults who are not pregnant or breastfeeding. It does not adjust for body composition, clinical circumstances or the choice of a reference weight in obesity. Discuss those issues with an appropriate clinician or dietitian instead of assuming actual body weight always gives a suitable target.

Exercising-adult range

The International Society of Sports Nutrition position stand describes 1.4-2.0 g/kg/day as sufficient for most exercising individuals to build and maintain muscle mass. Training, total food intake and individual circumstances affect application. This tool does not choose a point inside that range for you.

A higher figure does not guarantee muscle gain, fat loss or improved performance. This range is not a recommendation for children, pregnancy, breastfeeding, kidney disease or other clinical conditions. Age is used to restrict the tool to adults, not as a multiplier in the equation.

Custom factor and worked example

Choose Calculation method Custom grams per kg per day when you already have a factor you want to calculate. Entering 70 kg and a factor of 1.2 gives 84 g/day. The custom result is arithmetic, not an endorsement of the factor.

For the built-in exercise example, choose Exercising adult range (1.4-2.0 g/kg/day), Weight unit Kilograms (kg), Body weight 70 and Age (years) 30. Select Calculate protein. Daily protein is 98-140 g/day. The tool does not translate that range into a calorie deficit or a prescribed diet.

Related calculations and limitations

For grams based on a calorie allocation rather than a body-weight reference, use the Macro Calculator. The two approaches are different and their outputs need not match automatically.

Body weight must be positive up to 1000 in the selected unit and age a whole number from 18 to 100. These are software limits, not a statement that every accepted combination is physiologically appropriate. Results round to two decimal places; they do not indicate that individual needs are known to that precision.
