Grade Calculator: Weighted Average & Points

Calculate a course grade from category percentages and weights, or from earned and possible points. Choose the method used in your syllabus. Results are estimates of the numbers you enter, not an official school grade.

Enter a percentage score for each category. All weights must total 100%. This tool does not automatically redistribute missing weights.

This calculator requires JavaScript. The formulas and worked examples below can also be used by hand.

How to use the weighted grade calculator

Select Weighted average. Enter each category's percentage score and its percentage weight from your syllabus. Use categories such as homework, quizzes and exams, rather than assigning equal importance to every assignment unless your course does so.

Example: enter Score (%) 80 and Weight (%) 20 in row 1, Score (%) 90 and Weight (%) 30 in row 2, and Score (%) 70 and Weight (%) 50 in row 3. The weights total 100%, and the result is 78.00%.

Formula: weighted grade = sum of (score x weight) / sum of weights. This calculator requires weights to total 100%. For a completed-work-only estimate, enter weights that you have deliberately rescaled to 100%; that estimate is not necessarily your final course grade.

Calculate a grade from total points

Select Total points. For each assignment, enter Points earned and Points possible. Formula: grade (%) = total earned / total possible x 100. This gives higher-point assignments more influence, matching a points-based course.

Example: 18 earned out of 20 possible, 40 out of 50, and 75 out of 100 give 133 / 170 x 100 = 78.24%. Averaging the three assignment percentages instead would give 81.67%, which answers a different question.

Missing work, extra credit and course policies

An ungraded assignment is not automatically a zero. If your instructor has assigned a zero, enter zero; otherwise decide which completed work belongs in your estimate. Every displayed row must contain both numbers. Remove unused rows.

The tool accepts up to 20 rows. Scores above 100%, earned points above possible points, extra credit, dropped grades, Pass/Fail, replacement exams and course retakes are not modeled. Apply the course's documented rules before entering an adjusted summary. Switching methods clears the rows so weights cannot be mistaken for point totals.

Does this calculate GPA or a final exam target?

No. It calculates a percentage from your entered scores. GPA requires your institution's grade-point scale and credit rules. A required-final-exam calculation also needs a target and remaining exam weight. This version does not calculate that target or guarantee a passing grade.

Calculations run in your browser. This calculator does not send the entered scores to a server or save them between visits. Copy your result before resetting or closing the page.
