Pool Volume Calculator: Above-Ground Pools, Gallons & Liters

Estimate water volume for a flat-bottom above-ground pool using its inside dimensions at the waterline and actual water depth. Compare US gallons, liters, and cubic meters.

Pool dimensions and water volume

Use inside water dimensions, not outside frame dimensions or nominal model sizes. Water depth is the filled water level, not the height of the pool wall. All dimensions must describe the same water-filled shape. This model assumes a flat bottom with constant depth and vertical sides.

Enter up to 4 decimal places. Use decimal feet rather than feet-and-inches notation for length: 12 ft 6 in = 12.5 ft. Depth is entered directly in inches in US mode. Changing units clears measurements; changing shape clears length and width.

Enable JavaScript to calculate. For a rectangle, area = length x width; circle = pi x diameter squared / 4; ellipse = pi x length x width / 4; oblong = (length - width) x width + pi x width squared / 4. Volume = area x constant water depth in matching units. One cubic foot = 7.48051948 US gallons; one cubic meter = 1,000 liters.

How do I calculate the volume of a pool?

For a constant-depth pool, multiply its water surface area by its actual water depth using consistent units. Convert cubic feet to US gallons by multiplying by approximately 7.48051948. Convert cubic meters to liters by multiplying by 1,000.

Round above-ground pool example

A round pool with an actual inside waterline diameter of 18 ft and 48 inches of water has a depth of 4 ft. Volume = pi x 18 squared / 4 x 4 = approximately 1,017.88 cubic feet. That is approximately 7,614.24 US gallons, 28,823.04 liters, or 28.82 cubic meters. These example measurements describe water, not the pool's nominal model size or wall height.

Why are there two oval shapes?

A true ellipse curves continuously. An oblong or stadium shape has a rectangular middle with two semicircular ends. Their areas differ even with identical overall length and width. Select the shape matching the actual water outline. For other oval or irregular shapes, use manufacturer capacity data or a more detailed measurement method rather than forcing an ellipse formula.

Can I average shallow and deep depths?

This calculator uses one constant water depth. A simple average of minimum and maximum depths is not generally valid for pools with flat shallow sections, deep wells, steps, or complex slopes. Do not enter that average here as though it were a verified depth. Use a sectional volume calculation or suitable manufacturer data for nonuniform bottoms.

Are the gallons US or Imperial?

All gallon results are US liquid gallons. One US gallon is exactly 3.785411784 liters. Imperial gallons are different and are not shown. Feet and inches are converted using 0.3048 meters per foot and 0.0254 meters per inch.

What does the calculator exclude?

It does not determine chemical doses, pump or filter size, structural requirements, or safe operating conditions. Those depend on product instructions and pool specifications beyond volume. Water-delivery charges and filling time also require separate data.
