Volume Calculator: Box, Cylinder, Cone, Sphere & Cube

Calculate the volume of a cube, rectangular prism, cylinder, cone or sphere. Enter dimensions in one length unit and convert the result to cubic feet, cubic yards, cubic meters and liters. The formulas describe ideal geometric solids, not a guaranteed material order or container capacity.

Use the same length unit for all dimensions. Rectangular prism volume = length x width x height.

Cube and rectangular prism volume

A cube has equal edges: volume = side x side x side. A rectangular prism, also called a box or cuboid, uses volume = length x width x height. For Length 12, Width 10, Height 0.5 and Length unit Feet (ft), the volume is 60 ft³, approximately 2.222222 yd³ or 1.699011 m³.

Cylinder volume calculator

Volume = pi x radius squared x perpendicular height. A radius of 2 ft and height of 5 ft give approximately 62.831853 ft³. Radius is half the diameter. For an internal capacity estimate, measure the inside radius and usable internal height; external dimensions include the walls.

How to calculate the volume of a cone

Volume = pi x radius squared x perpendicular height / 3. With Radius 3, Perpendicular height 4 and Length unit Feet (ft), the result is approximately 37.699112 ft³. Enter the height from the base plane to the apex, not the slant length along the cone's side. This mode calculates a complete cone, not a truncated cone or frustum.

Sphere volume calculator

Volume = 4 / 3 x pi x radius cubed. A sphere with radius 3 ft has volume approximately 113.097336 ft³. If the diameter is 6 ft, enter Radius 3. A hemisphere is half a sphere, but this version reports the full sphere only.

Convert cubic units correctly

Cubic conversion factors are the cube of the corresponding length factor. One foot equals exactly 0.3048 meters, so one cubic foot equals 0.028316846592 cubic meters. One cubic yard contains 27 cubic feet. One cubic meter equals 1000 liters.

Do not divide cubic inches by 12 to obtain cubic feet: divide by 1728. Likewise, square feet alone cannot give cubic yards without a depth. If a footprint is 120 ft² and depth is 6 inches, first convert depth to 0.5 ft, then calculate 120 x 0.5 = 60 ft³.

Choose dimensions and understand the limits

All active dimensions must be greater than zero and at most 1,000,000 in the selected unit. Changing the solid or unit clears dimensions, so a box length cannot silently become a radius and an inch value cannot become a foot value.

The formulas assume the selected ideal solid. An irregular tank, rounded container, hollow shell, sloped excavation or partial fill needs a different model. This calculator does not automatically subtract an inner solid or combine multiple sections.

For flat shapes, use the Area Calculator. For a material purchase, use the appropriate concrete, gravel, soil or other material calculator with supplier information. Geometric volume alone does not determine density, tonnage, bag yield, compaction or the amount to order.
