BMI Calculator: Adult BMI in kg/cm & lb/in

Calculate body mass index (BMI) from height and weight in metric or US units. This tool uses standard adult categories for people aged 20 and older. BMI is a screening measure, not a diagnosis or a direct measurement of body fat.

Age confirms this calculator's adult scope; it does not change the BMI formula. Sex is not used in the standard adult BMI formula. Do not use this result to assess a child, pregnancy weight changes or an individual's nutritional needs.

How to calculate BMI in kg and cm

Formula: BMI = weight in kilograms / (height in meters x height in meters). Divide centimeters by 100 before squaring the height. For example, Weight (kg) 70 and Height (cm) 175 give 70 / (1.75 x 1.75) = 22.86 kg/m², displayed to two decimal places.

Calculate BMI in pounds, feet and inches

Enter whole feet and additional inches separately. For example, 5 feet 10 inches means 70 total inches. The tool converts pounds to kilograms using 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg and inches to centimeters using 1 in = 2.54 cm, then uses the same BMI formula. The familiar factor 703 is a rounded shortcut; exact unit conversion can produce a slightly different result near a boundary.

Standard adult BMI categories

18.5 to less than 25Healthy weight
25 to less than 30Overweight

35 to less than 40Class 2 obesity
40 or aboveClass 3 obesity

Why age does not adjust adult BMI

Age and sex do not change this standard adult formula or its category cutoffs. They can matter to an individual's broader clinical interpretation. Children and teenagers need a separate assessment using age- and sex-specific growth references; do not apply this adult category table to them.

What BMI cannot tell you

BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat or show where body fat is distributed. It can be less informative for muscular individuals and does not capture every difference related to age, ancestry or body composition. This calculator does not prescribe a target weight, calorie intake, weight-loss plan or treatment.

Measure height and weight carefully. Supported inputs are age 20 to 120, weight equivalent to 10 to 700 kg, and height equivalent to 50 to 300 cm. These are software input limits, not healthy or recommended ranges. Changing units clears measurement fields to avoid interpreting pounds as kilograms.
