How to Calculate Asphalt Tonnage: Formulas and Examples
To calculate asphalt tonnage, first find volume, then multiply by a density appropriate to the asphalt mix and the condition represented by that volume. Convert the resulting mass to the ton unit your supplier uses.
Use the Asphalt Calculator for rectangular areas with uniform thickness, US or metric measurements, and an optional material price.
Asphalt tonnage formula in US units
Volume (ft3) = length (ft) x width (ft) x thickness (in) / 12.
US short tons = volume (ft3) x density (lb/ft3) / 2,000.
Do not multiply feet by inches directly without converting thickness. If you start with cubic yards instead, multiply by 27 to obtain cubic feet before applying a density in lb/ft3.
Worked example: one cubic yard
For illustration only, use length 12 ft, width 9 ft, thickness 3 in, and density 145 lb/ft3. These values are assumptions for arithmetic, not a universal density or recommended pavement thickness.
- Thickness in feet: 3 / 12 = 0.25 ft.
- Volume: 12 x 9 x 0.25 = 27 ft3, or 1 cubic yard.
- Mass: 27 x 145 = 3,915 lb.
- US short tons: 3,915 / 2,000 = 1.9575.
If a supplier quoted $100 per US short ton for material alone, the arithmetic cost would be $195.75. This price is an example, not a market quote.
Metric formula
Volume (m3) = length (m) x width (m) x thickness (cm) / 100.
Metric tonnes = volume (m3) x density (kg/m3) / 1,000.
For an assumed 10 m x 4 m area at 5 cm thickness and a supplied density of 2,400 kg/m3, volume is 2 m3 and mass is 4,800 kg, or 4.8 metric tonnes. The assumptions must match the actual material and project.
Which ton does your supplier mean?
A US short ton is 2,000 lb, equal to exactly 907.18474 kg. A metric tonne is 1,000 kg. A long ton is 2,240 lb and is not the unit used by this calculator. Confirm the supplier's unit before multiplying by a price.
Choose density for the right material state
For a compacted pavement volume, use a corresponding compacted density supplied for the mix or specified by the project. Loose material and reclaimed asphalt can have different bulk densities. There is no single density that correctly represents every asphalt product and condition.
Do not add a generic compaction multiplier to a calculation that already uses compacted dimensions and compacted density. Discuss ordering allowances and minimum loads with the supplier.
Material cost is different from installed cost
Mass multiplied by a material price excludes labor, equipment, delivery, excavation, base preparation, taxes, minimum charges, and other services. An installed quote needs those additional details.
Frequently asked questions
Can I calculate from area instead of length and width?
The underlying formula is area x thickness x density. This calculator obtains rectangular area from length and width. Keep units consistent if calculating manually.
Does this determine the right pavement thickness?
No. It estimates quantities from the thickness you provide. It does not design pavement or assess loads, drainage, or the supporting base.
Can I use it for sealcoat?
No. Sealcoat generally requires product coverage and application information rather than this hot-mix volume-and-density model.
Why might actual quantities differ?
Measured dimensions, thickness variation, mix density, placement, and site conditions can all affect the amount needed. The tool excludes extra ordering allowances and does not round to available delivery quantities.
Try the Asphalt Calculator to compare volumes, US short tons, metric tonnes, and material-only cost with explicit assumptions.
